Pokémon (short for Pocket Monsters) is a franchise of video games, anime, and trading card games that was first introduced in Japan in 1996 by Nintendo. In the games, players assume the role of a Pokémon Trainer, catching and training creatures known as Pokémon to battle against other trainers and their Pokémon. As of 2021, there are over 900 different species of Pokémon, each with unique characteristics and abilities. The franchise has become incredibly popular worldwide and has spawned numerous spin-offs, merchandise, and media adaptations.
